Segmented Network
I guess Chris and I were bringing this up at some point -- can we put the Buffer boxes and ATP on a Jumbo network, which means some 192.168 thing?
I guess the answer is no -- the ATP’s NICs don’t do Jumbo, the switches would be prohibitively expensive, and with MTU 1500 we are doing ok so far.
I’m ready to hear arguments, but I think all benefits can be had in a much cheaper way, and don’t forget, the Catalyst has a really fat backplane, which we would need to match behind whatever router we could come up with.
We need to relieve the firewall from its boredom, though. 98 is decoupled 100% from the bad guys on the internet. But we are still open to attacks from inside the Lab, and every secretary can telnet into a Crate Controller and bring the DAQ down. It’s not just a perceived threat as we have seen.
