ASIC Approach Summary
ASIC can provide much lower per channel power, higher ROC channel density and lower per channel cost
ROC, transition card, FEM, backplane and crate procede early in the schedule
Low ROC channel density would force large numbers of LVL1 trigger G-links or a complex, highspeed inter-ROC connection scheme adding ROC design time and cost to schedule
Low ROC channel density would force inter-crate connections and control at FEM level adding FEM design time and cost to schedule
cots/discrete design channel density would decrease 8 - 16 times
Power would probably go up 5 - 10x
Design effort actually increases for cots/discrete design option
Cost per channel would approach $70 -$110 versus $10 -$12
