sPHENIX Hero: Emma McLaughlin

How long have you been working in sPHENIX and at what institution?

I have been working for sPHENIX since February 2022 and am currently a graduate student at Columbia University.

What is the focus of your work on the sPHENIX experiment?

I have focused mostly on calorimeter tasks for the sPHENIX experiment. Most recently I have been analyzing the Run 2023 Commissioning data to measure dETdeta.

Where were you born and what is your educational background before your current position?

I was born on Long Island! I do wish that I had better Long Island suggestions to suggest when people are visiting sPHENIX. I attended undergrad at Providence College prior to starting graduate school and working with sPHENIX.

What is the title of your Ph.D. or tentative title? Awards or biggest talk highlight?

The current tentative title for my thesis is “Measurements of transverse energy in Au+Au and p+p collisions with the sPHENIX detector”. I am very much looking forward to giving the first physics measurements of sPHENIX this week at SQM!

How did you decide to go into heavy ion or spin research?

When I first started in heavy ion research during undergrad, I was particularly drawn to the field because I found the hydrodynamic description of the QGP to be really interesting.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

In my spare time, I enjoy roller skating, reading and crocheting.

Fun fact?

Growing up I played the bagpipes as part of multiple pipe and drums bands and could be spotted in many Long Island St. Patty’s day parades.
