sPHENIX Hero: Justin Bennett

How long have you been working in sPHENIX and at what institution?

I have been working in sPHENIX for about 3 years now. I began as an undergraduate at Lehigh University, and now am a graduate student at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign.

What is the focus of your work on the sPHENIX experiment?

I focus on working with the sPHENIX calorimeters, particularly in the commissioning of the sPHENIX EMCal. Earlier, I was part of PPG01 which I contributed to the measurement of pi0 v2 using the Run 23 data set with the EMCal and MBD.

Where were you born and what is your educational background before your current position?

I was born in Greenwich, Connecticut, and completed a BS in Physics at Lehigh University with a data science minor.

What is the title of your Ph.D. or tentative title? Awards or biggest talk highlight?

I am still just getting settled into my PhD, but one thing I am interested in focusing on is flow and continuing the work that was completed in the pi0 v2 measurement with run 23 data set. As an undergraduate I received a grant from Lehigh University to do cosmic ray testing on the sPHENIX Event Plane Detector, and presented my research at the DNP in Fall 2022.

How did you decide to go into heavy ion or spin research?

I really enjoyed the analyses and physics I learned about when I did research as an undergraduate with Rosi Reed and Anders Knospe. They were great role models and lead me to pursuing this field in graduate school.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I enjoy playing piano, exercising, and watching movies in my free time.

Fun fact?

I graduated high school early and moved to Tel Aviv to work as an intern in software engineering before I went to college.
