5 years of tracking Heavy Ion collisions at RHIC Over the last 5 years the vertexing and tracking detectors at the four experiments at RHIC have experiences collisions of protons, deuterons, copper and gold ions at different energies and ever increasing luminosities. The rapidity densities of hundreds of charged particles per unit rapidity provide a challenge for all detectors. This talk tries to summarize the operation and lessons learned during these first years and to provide an outlook of the planned upgrades.
