Real and virtual photons are a penetrating probe,
carrying information about the entire history of the collision.
However, they are notoriously hard to measure - particularly the
thermal photons . (Except if you apply a creative
redefinition of the word "thermal"...) People enganged in the
crazy enterprise of trying to measure them are gathering in the
Thermal Photon Working Group.
I've been member of the E814/E877 Collaboration since February 9, 1987.
Despite this, the experiment became one of the major successes of the
AGS Relativistic Heavy Ion Program.
An old skeleton in the closet, from 1993. Four years of hard work with
Peter Braun-Munzinger, Johanna Stachel, Craig L. Woody culminated in this
proposal. As the Romans put it: Per aspera ad acta :-)))
In other words: "on a bumpy road to oblivion".
