Workshop on "Transverse Dynamics at RHIC"

date:  Feb 20-22 (Thursday-Saturday), 2003
location:  BNL
title:  Transverse Dynamics at RHIC

Dear Colleagues,

We are currently in the process of organizing a 3-day workshop on transverse distributions obtained in collisions at RHIC. The workshop will focus on recent RHIC data with particular emphasis on the transverse momentum distributions of identified  particles, the nuclear modification factor R_AA, and the anisotropy (v2) and asymmetry of angular correlations obtained with high pt hadrons.

Recent experimental results from the first two years at RHIC have provided a wealth of new information along with many surprises and puzzles. These include high pt suppression, saturation of the v2 parameters for moderate to high pTs, and the disappearance of back-to-back jets in central Au+Au collisions. The goal of the workshop is to bring experimentalists and theorists together to discuss, evaluate, and hopefully reach a consensus on several issues including the following:

(i) The interpretation of current observations.
(ii) The interplay between azimuthal anisotropy/asymmetry measurements
and jet-quenching and any additional insight on reaction dynamics such interplay brings.
(iii) The effects of the high pt processes on the bulk properties of the system created at RHIC.
(iv) Plans for the future, ie. what essential data are still missing? What additional measurements are needed? Are the current uncertainties in the data sufficiently small to constrain models? Are the models up to the task and what improvements are needed?

A tentative date, Feb 20 - 22, (Thursday - Saturday) 2003,  and place, BNL,  has been set for the workshop. Limited support for travel and housing expenses is anticipated.
