Installing an ArcNet daughter card on the Calibration ArcNet card ----------------------------------------------------------------- MJL - 3/4/02 * Locate a known good ArcNet daughter card. An ArcNet daughter card is a small (~2" x 5") card with two RJ-45 phone connectors on it and two D-shaped multipin connectors on either end of the bottom of the board that are used to mate with the main board it will plug onto. * Carefully remove the main calibration ArcNet board from the VME crate by losening its screws and popping it out using the top and bottom handle/levers. * Place this board on a level surface on top of an anti-static bag. Gently pry the old ArcNet daughter card off by pulling with your fingers on both ends of the daughter card until it released at the two D-connectors. * Set up all the jumper on the new ArcNet daughter card exactly the same as the old one. * Push the new daughter card onto the two D-connectors on the calibratoin board where the old one was. * A switch-block on the main board next to where the daughter card mounts sets the address of the ArcNet daughter card. Check its settings. See other document. * Carefully line up the main board with the card guides in the VME crate and slide it back in. Push with your fingers firmly and evenly at top and bottom until card pops into the backplane. Be very careful, you don't want to damage the backplane. Then tighter down the screws at top and bottom on the front panel. * After powering up the calibration VME crate you should see the calibration node at address 0xef with a "passive network map" from the ArcNet control program. * If all is well then next we have to worry about what user code is loaded in the ArcNet card. For calibration operations we need to have calib.hex loaded. * So use the ArcNet control program on the PC to "send hex file". You will need to locate a copy of calib.hex and know where it is on the PC. calib.hex can be obtained on Andrew's ArcNet Web site at, http://nuclear.physics.nmsu.edu/ahoover/software.html see the section titled "Calibration". * After you have "sent" this hex file to the calibration arcnet card then it should be ready to go for the usual calibration operations that are documented elsewhere.
