PHENIX EMCal HEBT Status - 8/10/98
- Schedule
- at the H6 beam line
- Aug.19 - Sep.8 will be shared with the PHENIX/EMCal group and the ALICE/Phos group.
- Aug.19 - Aug.26 - 6.5days
- Aug.26 - Aug.31 - 4.5days
- Sep. 2 - Sep. 8 - 5.5days
- The ALICE group will start installation (trigger etc.) from Aug.24 or Aug.25 morning. After some Phos test, the PHENIX group will start beam time (4 days long ?).
- We are proposing to put all three calorimeters (PbSc, PbGl and Phos) on the same platform to take data in turn with same beam particle and same energy instead of dividing beam time for PHENIX and ALICE. This will save time to change setup of CEDAR which takes a few hours each time. - It will be discussed in the ALICE group.
- So, current share of beam time is;
- Aug.24or25 - Aug.27 - ALICE installation
- Aug.27 ? - ALICE Phos test
- Aug.27 - Aug.30 ? - PHENIX beam time or ALICE/PHENIX beam time ?
- Aug.30 - Sep.8 - ALICE beam time or ALICE/PHENIX beam time ?
- There is no stray magnetic field from the H8 beam line.
- The H8 user is requesting low energy run from Aug.24 to Aug.31.
-> Schedule of the SPS fixed target program
-> CERN SPS Secondary Beamline
- Beam time plan
- Shower mapping - 20GeV electron
- We make map for 1/8 area of 52.5mm*52.5mm (PbSc tower) with 1mm pitch and 500events/mm**2. - 500*52.5*52.5/8 = 2*10**5events
- If we have 200particles/spill (14.4sec/spill), it takes 500*52.5*52.5/8/200*14.4 = 12000sec = 3hours.
- We have two EMCal (PbSc+PbGl). - 3hours*2 = 6hours
- Non-orthogonal incident particle - 20GeV electron
- If we take data for 1hour (1/3 of 1., 5*10**4events) for PbSc and PbGl and it takes 2hours to set angle 10degree and 20degree. - (1hour*2+2)*2 = 8hours
- Energy sum - (5,)10,40,80GeV electron
- This is for energy resolution and non-linearity measurement.
- If we take data for 1hour for PbSc and PbGl and it takes 2hours to set beam energy (CEDAR work necessary). - (1hour*2+2)*4 = 16hours
- Hadron response - 40GeV pi-
- This is to know tail of hadron response as a background of electron detection. If this tail is % order level and we collect 10**4 events for this tail, it takes 20hours.
- For PbSc and PbGl - 20hours*2 = 40hours
- It may be difficult to make 40hours for 4. So the proposal for 3 days is following.
- 1/2 day
- 1/2 day
- 1 day
- 1 day and remaining time
- PbGl people (Muenster) prefer to take energy sum data and 20degree non-orthogonal data.
- Beam intensity
- electron - Pb target
- With few cm beam spot size and 1% momentum bite, 1,000/spill at low energy and 10K/spill at high energy (1spill = 2.3sec/14.4sec).
- For low energy run, 10GeV is optimum, but we can use up to 40GeV with few*1,000/spill.
- pion - polyethylene target & Pb absorber
- 10GeV is difficult - 10/spill
- 40GeV - few*100/spill
- 80GeV - 5,000/spill
- Beam equipments
- CEDAR
- The Muenster group will take care.
- For the setup, we can contact Konrad Elsener after we start the setup.
- It takes 2 hours to change the condition.
- beam information
- Start of extraction and end of extraction (TTL) are provided at the counting house and at the rack beside the setup.
- Where is the beam trigger logic made ? - Is it given, or do we make it by ourselves ?
- How is the timing ?
- Platform
- Available width of the platform is 92cm. Width of the PbSc SM is 66cm, and that of PbGl 4SM's is 32 (or 48)cm. We can configure vertically PbSc and PbGl. It must be decided at CERN how to stack PbSc and PbGl (top or bottom). Height variation of the stage is 83cm.
- The ALICE group is planning to use their own platform with their cooling machine. It will be placed downstream of our platform.
- CAMAC Readout and control of the platform is available only at the counting house.
- For non-orthogonal incidence, crane work will be necessary.
- Main crane is available.
- It takes 30mins to ask technician (8:30-4:30, no Sat&Sun).
- How can we align and survey the setup ? (0, 10, 20 degree) - Mishca will investigate.
- Detector & trigger
- position detector
- DWC, preamp, cables, L.V., etc. will be shipped from Muenster.
- Gas (Ar/Methane) is already ordered at CERN.
- CFD's 5ch have to be shipped from BNL or found at the CERN electronics pool.
- LRS2228A (long range type) will be checked at ORNL stock.
- H.V. 3kV, 1microA, positive, 1ch is necessary.
- trigger
- e, h, mu, spill-on, spill-off, laser, pedestal
- It takes about 1.5microsec to make trigger signal for the shaping.
- Trigger signal is available both at the counting house and at the fence.
- Working space
- counting house
- Few*10m away from the setup.
- 50-60m cable is necessary. - ask ALICE people
