Summary of the May 25th 2003 Meeting in Manhattan & future plans:
The purpose of this meeting was to plan and start work towards the
eRHIC detector development. The time line for a first document related
to eRHIC, the so called, ZDR (Zero'th Design Review/report) is expected
by the BNL Directorate by Jaunary 2004. It is expected that this will
be reviewd by an external committee and will form the basis for the
CD0 required by DoE to officially start the project.
After a brief introduction of the above goals by Abhay Deshpande,
Peter Paul, the
Deputy Director for Science and Technology at BNL, and Prof. Richard Milner
made introductory comments which included BNL's view of the Physics beyond
RHIC leading towards the eRHIC, the Management's expectations and the
time line to follow for the detector development. Richard emphasized
the need to push the detector development at a high speed.
Abhay Deshpande reviewed the physics which has been studied so far
for the eRHIC, and invited new physics ideas and measurements to be
proposed. Vadim Ptitsyn (BNL-CAD), reviewed the design status of the
eRHIC electron beam and interaction region (IR) design. Vadim represented
the BNL-MIT/Bates/Budker collaboration that has been working on the
development of the electron ring design. This was followed by a brief
presentation by Bernd Surrow(BNL) of the status of the detector design
tool that is being developed at BNL and will be available soon (approx.
a month) to be used by others to study detector design issues for eRHIC.
Towards the end Naomi Makins lead the discussion on MC generators
she has been getting together at UIUC with her group (i.e. converting
some of the already existing MC physics generators used for fixed target
experiments to the collider geometry) with a view to be used in
the studies for eRHIC.
The day ended with the home work assigments and assigning list of physics
